Questions & Answers with Jesmin Mannan

What is your specific area of STEM?

Technology is my specific area of STEM

When did you first become interested in tech and was there a moment where you knew you were going to be a computer programmer?

When I was in high school my dad brought a computer at home for his work. Slowly each of our family members started learning how to operate it. But I was thinking there should be much more to do with this machine rather than typing, painting. So, after my school final I joined a computer learning school for 3 months with my scholarship money. Then I started to learn more, but I saw there are more and more advanced courses which were expensive that time. So, I was kind of sad and felt helpless. During my college period I used to work as a computer teacher for kids voluntarily. so, everyone in the family could understand my eagerness for learning and practicing technology. and they never stopped me. My dad was the one who wanted to see me as computer programmer. I did my bachelor’s in computing and information system but was a bit confused about my career because the program or coding we learn in school is not the same in real world. while doing my MBA I tried a job as a software QA engineer and luckily, I got it. When I started working in real world that was the moment I decided to stay in this field.

How would you explain your STEM field to young girls?

All of us, especially young people, need to learn how to exercise moderation in the things we spend time on. Technology for teens is fun and allows them to stay connected to their friends and family, which is important. Some teenagers will do this by spending a lot of time connecting with their friends on social media, or by hanging out with other ‘gamers’ when playing multi-player games online. That’s okay! But it’s important for them to balance that with learning, technology is a vast area its not only doing online activities.

What traits might a child possess that may indicate an interest or aptitude for your STEM field?

Taking the time to ensure that your personality is compatible with your career choice is extremely important. If you do not invest the time now to figure out what makes you happy and keeps you motivated every day, you could be very unhappy in the future. If you are interested in technology and you have hard skills e.g. using a computer, speaking a foreign language, or operating a machine then this field is or you.

Why did you choose your STEM field? Were you inspired by someone?

As I mentioned before it was my father who inspired me and supported me.

What is the biggest challenge you face as a woman in STEM?

The biggest challenge was working in tech field was Gender Inequality.

Do you still see sexism and discrimination in the workplace?

Yes, I saw it when I was working in some companies in Bangladesh. But in tech field I think it’s less than others. where there is a Gender inequality this problem will remain.
